ST.PAUL, VIRGINIA - James Edgar "Chub" Crowder, 76, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2019 at Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, Tennessee. He was born in Hamlin, Virginia, son of the late Edgar and Helen Crowder. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gary L. Crowder and sister, Barbara C. Pace. Chub graduated from St. Paul High School and the University of Tennessee with a major in accounting. He began his professional career at Beaunit Fibers in Elizabethton, Tennessee. Following that, he spent several years in the accounting department at Tennessee Eastman in Kingsport, Tennessee. He left Tennessee Eastman and returned home to St. Paul, Virginia where he and his family owned and operated St. Paul Builders and Supply Company, Inc. for the next 45 years. Chub was a dedicated Christian and an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He was an avid Tennessee Vols fan, and he enjoyed watching and following all college sports. Other hobbies that he enjoyed included going on cruises with family and friends, playing Words with Friends and tending the cattle on his farm. Most of all, he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of fifty three years, Benny G. Crowder; two daughters, Betsy Weiss and husband, Rob of Jackson, Tennessee and Barbi Healey and husband, Dave of Westerville, Ohio; six grandchildren, Ryan Weiss, Seth Weiss, Katherine Chafin, Andy Clifton and wife, Natalya, Nick Clifton and wife, Tori and Sam Healey; three great grandchildren, Blake and Baker Chafin and Greyson Clifton; one step-grandson, Alex Healey; one sister, Doris Fletcher and husband, Kyle; two sisters-in-law, Judy Crowder and Lynn Campbell and husband, Bill; special cousin, Carson Hamilton. Funeral Services for James Edgar "Chub" Crowder will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2019 in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood, Virginia with Rev. Harry Layell officiating. Entombment will follow in Valley View Mausoleum - Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Virginia. Pallbearers will be former employees of St. Paul Builders: Calvin "Bingo" Grizzle, Steve Austin, Rob Austin, Danny Austin, Randy Rose, Jimmy Scarberry, Bob Steffey, and Jerry Barnette. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2019 in Castlewood Funeral Home, Castlewood, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 656, St. Paul, Virginia 24283.
